White Buffalo Calf Pipe

Indian Affairs, Human Rights , Our Community

We often lose contact with the true purpose of certain plants as we lose contact with the earth.

The tobacco industry has turned this holy plant into a commodity and robbed it of its beneficial qualities.

Tobacco is still very important to those who live close to the Earth. As an appetite suppressant, it has enabled tribes to survive long harsh winters and other periods of low supplies without killing each other, hence the "peace pipe".

The elders knew that the children need food for healthy growth and that the young men, if feeling pangs of hunger, would be irritable and likely to fight. The elders kept peace in the camp by passing the pipe, ensuring that adults could survive off their own body-storage while children received some of the available pemmican without fear of angry, hungry adults.

This is but one of the practical, beneficial uses of tobacco that we must not forget. We will be facing harsh times, and we would do well to keep supplies of tobacco and to use those supplies carefully as our elders once did.
